How It Works

The Maine Adventure Relay is an around the clock, non-stop adventure with 12-person standard teams or ultra teams (4 or 6 person team) that will rotate through 36 transition areas as they explore the over 200-mile course. Each relay team member will run 3 legs (6 legs for ultras) of varying lengths and difficulty, and will cover an average total distance of about 17 miles (about 35 miles for ultras). Runners rotate in a set order once the race begins and will be obligated to follow this rotation until the final runner reaches the party at the end of the final leg. All teams are expected to maintain a minimum average pace of approximately 10 minutes per mile as they complete the course.

Exchange Areas

An Exchange Area (EA) is a designated location where one runner passes the slap bracelet ‘baton’ off to another runner. EAs are numbered and identified as 1 through 36 on the course maps and directions.

Vehicle Exchange Areas

A Vehicle Exchange Area (VEA) is an EA location where the last runner from Van 1 (runners 1-6) passes the slap bracelet off to Van 2 (runners 7-12).
